What does the dental implant process entail?
Once any necessary dental extractions have been performed and the gums have healed, a small incision will be made, and a titanium implant will be placed in a small hole the jawbone. During the healing process, the implant will fuse with the jawbone in a process called osseointegration. This implant creates a sturdy base for the natural-looking artificial tooth to attach to, which we will carefully craft to blend in seamlessly with your smile. Dental implants are incredibly reliable restorations that function very similarly to natural teeth.
How does an implant compare to a bridge or a denture?
Dental bridges are less invasive and cost less than an implant, but their lifespan is significantly shorter than a durable dental implant, which can last a lifetime. They also require the nearby abutment teeth to be altered so the bridge will fit properly. Traditional dentures are used to replace an entire arch of teeth, and they are secured on the gums with a denture adhesive. Implant-supported dentures combine the best of both worlds, as they can replace many teeth at once but still offer the stability and longevity of dental implants.
Types of Implants
Single Implants can be used to replace one missing tooth or several missing teeth. Each implant is designed to replicate the missing tooth, blend in with the surrounding teeth, and complete the patient’s smile.
Implant-Supported Dentures are used to replace an entire arch of teeth. About four implants are placed throughout the arch and a custom denture is designed to easily snap onto each implant. These dentures are much more stable than traditional dentures, they don’t cause gum soreness, and they are easier to eat with.
